It is the everyday rack most people picture: pairs of upright frames tied together by load beams, with every pallet opening facing an aisle. Because each load can be reached without moving another one, selective rack suits buildings with lots of SKUs, works with ordinary lift trucks, and carries the lowest price per pallet opening of any rack style. Most pallet rack standing in warehouses today is selective.

The honest answer depends on beam length, frame height, capacity and how much engineering the building needs, so we price each job after walking the floor. As a rule of thumb, inspected used rack comes in around 40–60% under new. Dense systems such as pushback and pallet flow cost more per opening but fit far more loads on the same slab, which often makes them cheaper per pallet actually stored.

Used steel makes sense for common beam lengths and moderate heights, provided every piece has been checked against ANSI/RMI MH16.1 before it goes up. New is the better path for very tall runs, high-piled storage that needs stamped drawings, and unusual configurations. The rack is rarely the limit. Clear height to the roof structure, the clearance your sprinkler system requires below its heads, and how high your lift trucks can reach set the ceiling. Newer tilt-wall buildings along the Grand Parkway and in the Bay Area often have enough clear height for tall uprights, while older buildings nearer the ship channel usually run lower.
